4.341/4.342 Introduction to Photography and Related Media

Andrea Frank

TA Scott Berzovsky

This project-based studio course is centered around a series of student-initiated projects addressing a term specific topic. Assignments are designed to explore a range of traditional and experimental techniques, to develop technical skills, and to provide opportunity for personal exploration. Student projects are continuously presented and discussed in a critical forum.

Lectures, readings, visiting professionals, group discussions, and a field trip introduce the history and contemporary practices in artistic photography, encourage aesthetic appreciation of the medium, and a critical awareness of how images in our culture are produced and constructed.

Students receive practical instruction in the fundamentals of different camera formats, film exposure and development, black-and-white darkroom printing and digital imaging in state of the art facilities, and flash/lighting.

35mm and digital SLRs, medium format cameras and 4×5 view cameras available for checkout. Open to students with no or little photography experience.
