Kinetic Speakers and Experimental Sound Creations

Instructor: Jan St. Werner

TA: Jose Rivera

Sound art as an unstable art form tends to merge with other disciplines and yet it makes strong claims for disciplinary autonomy. In the course, German experimental composer and musician Jan St. Werner highlights critical aspects of sound to create a multi-layered deconstruction of what is generally considered a merely “entertaining” practice. Students will take lessons from both the history and present of experimental composing, recording, and performance to develop their individual perspectives on sound and its associated conventions. For the final class project, students are asked to submit a recorded musical piece, a sound installation, an audio play, a theory, a performance, a sound-based choreography, or a score.

Enrollment limited to 12 students.
