SUMMARY:Honor Harger | Sounds in Space: Revealing the Invisible Universe
DESCRIPTION:How are the frontiers of the universe being mapped\, visualized\, and sonified by artists? \nOur understanding of the universe is not just the result of scientific research and technological innovation. Artists have been active in producing some of the most powerful and persistent ideas about the possibilities of of universe we exist within\, just as the cartographers of the past worked hand-in-hand with artists who illustrated and interpreted the new worlds they discovered. Moving upwards and outwards to cosmological scales\, Honor Harger will also reveal how artists and musicians working with astronomy\, plasma physics\, and asteroseismology are probing the frontiers of the universe. \nHonor Harger is the director of ArtScience Museum in Singapore. Her artistic practice is known under the name r a d i o q u a l i a\, which is a collaboration with Adam Hyde. One of their main projects was Radio Astronomy\, a radio station broadcasting sounds from space. She was the first webcasting curator for Tate Modern in London\, 2000-2003. \nThis open lecture is a part of 4.320/1: Introduction in Sound Creation Course – Expanded Field Radio and Acoustic Immersions\, organized by class instructors: Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits\, and TA: Gary Zhexi Zhang.
