Lucy Orta

Lucy Orta is Professor of Art and the Environment at the University of the Arts London since 2002. She is a member of the European Cultural Parliament and an internationally recognised contemporary visual artist who has exhibited her work in major museums across the world. Her work has been the focus of survey exhibitions at The Barbican Art Gallery London and Venice Biennale (2005), Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam (2006) and Hangar Biccoca Milan (2008). Monograph publications on her work include: Phaidon Press UK 2005, Black Dog Publishing UK 2007, Electa Italy 2008, and forthcoming Princeton Architectural Press USA 2010. Her track record in the domain of artistic social action can serve the objectives of the project, which are to trigger an active participation in the process of governance. The ten-year collaborative project ‘The Gift’ (1996-2006) implicated over 35,000 people in the Meurthe and Moselle region of France, around the subject of organ transplant and donation, is an excellent example of the way in which artists providing the visual tools and methodologies to raise awareness for collective action; networking key players in this instance the medical, legal and governmental domains, and effecting legislative change for organ donors. She has previously received EU Culture Funding 2007 for a study on the migration patterns and living conditions of Roma populations across Europe.
