Visiting Lecturer 2018 - present

Rasa Smite is artist and researcher, working with science and emerging technologies. She is founding director of RIXC Center for New Media Culture in Riga, Latvia (, curator of annual RIXC’s Art and Science festivals (, initiator and founder of Renewable Futures conference series, and a chief-editor of Acoustic Space, peer-reviewed publication series, co-edited together with Lev Manovich, Armin Medosch, Raitis Smits and other authors (


She holds a PhD in sociology of culture; she is author of the book “Creative Networks. In the Rear-View Mirror of Eastern European History”, published by Amsterdam Institute for Network Culture (2012), on a bases of her dissertation. She is professor in New Media Art and senior researcher at Art Research Lab (MPLab) of Liepaja University, and leads Audiovisual Media and Digital Arts research group at RISEBA University for Business, Arts and Technology in Riga. Currently, she also works a Researcher in “Ecodata” project at The Institute of Aesthetic Practices, The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland in Basel.


In her artistic practice, Smite works together with Raitis Smits creating networked, visionary, and innovative artworks. Their pioneering internet project – Xchange Net.Radio Network was awarded with PRIX Ars Electronica (1998). More recent artworks: Talk to Me – human plant communication project, and Biotricity – real-time data visualization and multi-channel sound installation exploring a poetics of green energy, have been exhibited in HeK (Basel, Switzerland, 2012), Ars Electronica Center (Project Genesis exhibition, 2013-2014), National Science and Technology Museum in Stockholm (2015), Van Abbe Museum for Modern and Contemporary Arts (The Netherlands, 2016), ZKM (Open Codes exhibition, 2017-2018), and elsewhere. For their long-term contribution to the field of digital art and international achievements, Rasa Smite and Raitis Smits have been awarded with Excellence in Culture Award (Riga, Latvia).

Currently Smite and Smits work on Swamp Radio – immersive environmental visualization and sonification project, the first results of which will be presented in ACT in spring 2018, celebrating CAVS 50th at MIT, and as a part of Swamp Pavillion / Swamp Summer School project in Venice Architecture Biennial 2018.
