Gary Zhexi Zhang is an artist and writer with an interest in socio-technical objects. His recent work explores the politics and aesthetics of decentralisation organisations such as swarms, mycelia and markets. He works with film, installation and software.

His current research, ‘erotic communism’, explores the entanglement of bio- and technological networks in material, speculative and poetic imaginaries, led in part by the social amoeba, Physarum Polycephalum. Zhang is especially interested in the relationship between behaviour and morphology, particularly within decentralised social organisations: mycelia, swarms, internets and markets. He is a staff contributor at Frieze magazine and has also written for publications such as FOAM, MAPElephant and Fireflies. Recent exhibitions include ALL CHANNELS OPEN at Wysing Arts Centre, Bourn, Cambridgeshire (2017) and Hereafter at The White Building, London (2017); recent residencies include Wysing Arts Centre (2017), BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Arts, Gateshead (2017); CCA, Glasgow (2017) and SPACE Art & Technology, London (2017).

Recent and upcoming exhibitions include Cross-feed at Glasgow International 2018, vdrome.org (online), ALL CHANNELS OPEN at Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire (2017) and Hereafter at The White Building, London (2017). Zhang has previously held residencies at PRAKSIS, Oslo; BALTIC, Gateshead; CCA, Glasgow and Wysing Arts Centre. His writing has been published in Frieze, Elephant, FOAM, King’s review, and he is currently a curatorial advisor for Science Gallery London’s Dark Matter season (2019).
