As part of artist and Professor Renée Green’s exhibition Contact at moCa Cleveland, a series of public programs are taking place this upcoming weekend in Cleveland.
On November 18th 2022, the Case Western Reserve University Film Society will host a screening of Suneil Sanzgiri’s trilogy of films: At Home but Not at Home (2019), Letter from Your Far-Off Country (2020); and Golden Jubilee (2021). The screening will be followed by a conversation between Sanzgiri and Renée Green.
On November 19th and 20th 2022, Index Literacy Program will present Paradoxa, a conversation drawn from the artists’ ongoing collective research on indexicality and the politics of indexical forms. A collaborative research practice led by Laura Serejo Genes, Nolan Oswald Dennis, and Pedro Zylbersztajn, Index Literacy Program will explore their work present at moCa’s galleries through a history of pointing and other suggestive gestures in science, ornithology, and taxonomy.
A contrapuntal exhibition, Contact interweaves and places in conversation Green’s own works with a vast array of invited participants with whom she’s been in conversation through the years, among them Sanzgiri and Index Literacy Program. Works from Serejo Genes, Dennis, and Zylbersztajn’s practice as artists are also exhibited in the museum.
Intrinsic to the discursive space enacted by the exhibition, Contact’s public programs have included presentations by Derrick Green, lead singer of legendary heavy metal band Sepultura, as well as a creative assembly by Gabriel Kahan.
Contact‘s film series has screened films by John Akomfrah, Renée Green, Harun Farocki, Karim Aïnouz, Che Applewhaite, and the Cinematic Migrations Workshop, among others, while Suneil Sanzgiri programmed an evening of film shorts featuring the work of Priya Sen & Nicolás Grandi, Bassem Saad, Akosua Adoma Owusu, Natasha Raheja, and Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich.
Ian Soroka’s Greetings from Free Forests (2018) will be screened on December 16th 2022, while Jessica Sarah Rinland’s Those That, at a Distance, Resemble Another (2019) will play on December 20th 2022; Rinland’s photographic and sculptural work related to this film is also exhibited at moCa.
Running until December 31st 2022, the exhibition and related public programs exceed the duration of FRONT, the Cleveland Triennial of Contemporary Art, which issued an invitation to Green to produce a project for the Triennial in partnership with moCa Cleveland.
