Erin Genia (SMACT ’19), a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate tribe, will hang a 20-foot banner from the Nicollet Tower on the Lake Traverse Reservation, where Genia spent some of her youth. The work is called “Wičaȟnpi,” which translates to “star” in Dakota, a language of the Sioux Nation.
The banner will show the Morning Star, a prominent image in Genia’s work, and an important Dakota symbol. Genia featured the symbol locally in her mural, Wakpa, at the Aidekman Art Center at the Tufts University Art Galleries.
Genia’s new work was given a profile in Hyperallergic, which can be read here.
