Zhanyi Chen’s art practice runs parallel to her studies in media theory, exploring the metaphors and their transformations of weather and environment within contemporary techno-cultural landscapes. By intervening in the natural and meteorological environments (intermixed with artifacts), either materially or conceptually, she attempts to capture and curate the unreadable “failed” information within natural and elemental media, constructing scenes of Frankenstein-like tragedies instigated by the infatuation with technological determinism. Recently, her focus has been on natural terrains penetrated by human infrastructure, examining the relationship between the environment and media, where they are mutually being each other, shaping one another, as well as the gaps within this relationship.
