Stephen Benton was the inventor of the rainbow hologram. After receiving an electrical engineering undergraduate degree from MIT in 1963, he worked with MIT Professor Harold "Doc" Edgerton, a pioneer in stroboscopy, and at Polaroid Corporation in Edwin Land's vision research laboratory. He became a visiting scientist at MIT's Laser Research Center in 1980, founding the Spatial Imaging Group in 1982. He also became a founding faculty member of the Media Lab in 1984. In 1996 he became the director of the MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies until his death in 2003.
