Hiroharu Mori

Working largely in video, installation and public interventions, Hiroharu Mori makes critical works that comment on the mechanics of mass culture. Through his ongoing exploration of slippages in translation, questions of identity and the tensions and contradictions of everyday life, he never loses sight of the capacity contemporary art has for poetry and play, which is seen reflected in his extensive portfolio of works.

Since 1998 he has exhibited widely both internationally and in Japan, has received a number of awards and undertaken residencies in several countries including, the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw, Poland; The Faculty of Art and Design, Monash University, Caulfield, Australia; the Montalvo Arts Center, Saratoga, CA, USA; the DaimlerChrysler Foundation, Berlin, Germany and at the SSamzie Space, Seoul, Korea. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at MIT ACT supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of the Japanese government, focusing his academic research on the Visual Representation in Multimedia Journalism and Studio Art Practices at Institutions of Higher Education.

His selected solo exhibitions include Death Workshop, New Zealand 2015; Speech Rehearsals: students, housewives, politicians, Australia 2010; his speech, hiromiyoshii, Tokyo, 2009 and Hiroharu Mori is detached from the outside world, Artspace, Sydney, 2007. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions including the PUBLIC SPACE? LOST & FOUND, MIT, Cambridge, 2014; Burn what you cannot steal, Gallery Nova, Zagreb, Croatia, 2012; Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo, 2011; Dazzling, Garandô (Dazzling, Hollowness), The University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokyo, 2010; Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2009, Niigata, 2009; The City As a Stage, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2008 and Think with the Senses – Feel with the Mind. Art in the Present Tense at the Venice Biennale in 2007. In 2016, he co-directed and curated the MOT Annual 2016: Loose Lips Save Ships exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Japan.

He is lecturer at several art colleges and institutions in Japan including, the Tokyo University of the Arts, Tokyo Zokei University and the Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT) and is co-founder of the organization “ARTISTS’ GUILD”, launched in 2009 in Japan. Formed as a social experimentation by and for artists, the organization explores new ways to support and improve artistic activities.
