Laura Serejo Genes

Laura Serejo Genes is an artist and second-year Masters of Science candidate in Art, Culture and Technology at MIT.

Working through performance, sculpture and photography her recent projects tackle the question of how to make art “on campus” and how the university environment can be a place to activate forms of citizenship that are not as accessible or attainable on a larger scale. As she prepares to step out of this institutional safe-zone, she is refocusing her research efforts around the site of the US Embassy building in Havana, Cuba.

Considering all built forms, temporary and permanent, on this charged site along the Malecón, she hopes to draw lines between the aesthetics of political gestures and conceptual art. As of late, Laura is considering how her art practice can re-engage forgotten details of history to expose sensitivities that give a face and expose the hands involved in supporting seemingly hegemonic political realities.
