Introduction to Photography and Related Media – Section 2 (Fall 2024)
4.341 U / 4.342 G
This introductory photography course will develop a student’s visual literacy as well as their technical skill when operating camera controls such as aperture, shutter speed, and ISO.
Weekly assignments will exercise several creative techniques of camerawork using film and digital formats. In the studio, students will be guided through a workflow process that includes developing a mood board, establishing a digital archive, non-destructive editing on Adobe, and an introduction to studio lighting. In the darkroom, we will concentrate on the use of 35mm cameras and chemical processing. Students are instructed in proper camera use, basic film exposure, and darkroom familiarity.
Weekly class meetings will oscillate between tutorial, demonstration, and seminar discussions of lectures, readings, films, exhibitions and more. At the end of this course, students will submit a thematic photography portfolio that demonstrates their understanding of camera mechanics to shoot recognizable motifs such as the portrait, the still life, the landscape, or the long exposure to arrange a cohesive narrative sequence. 35mm and digital SLRs cameras are limited, but available for check out.
