Octopus

Inflatable sculpture collaboration with Clifford Henricksen, 1968/1969. Strong timed blower inside a black core drum (5' hight, 4 1/2 feet in diameter) causes black rubber walls of drum to inflate and deflate and causes 15-feet-long black cloth arms to inflate and stretch or deflate and curl. One end of each arm is attached to one of eight outlet pipes on the drum top; the other end of each arm is guided by wires attached to the ceiling. Eight open-ended pipes protruding radially from a vertical breath stack in the center of the cored drum permit viewers to change the air stream and thereby change shape of arms from inflated to deflated.
