Artist and ACT Lecturer, Kelly Nipper has invited her Performance Art Workshop (PAW) class to develop a set of actions inspired by their own experimental artistic community, with its unique rituals, missions, ethics, and aesthetics. Performances will take place within the context of ICA Boston’s Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College 1933-1957 exhibition, as part of Theater Piece No.1×50.

Declared the first Happening and later named Theater Piece No. 1, an unnamed performance took place in August 1952 at Black Mountain College that would become one of the most famous events in the college’s history. Nipper was invited by the ICA, along with five Boston-based artists to reimagine Theater Piece No. 1 by proposing a series of actions that will take place in the ICA galleries and throughout the museum.

Wed, Oct 21, 11 AM

Action 2:
Björn Sparrman + Jessika Khazrik
Sat, Oct 24, 12 PM
Description: Two performers stand apart, connected via a pair of telephones. One speaks the word “poem”, and the other repeats exactly what is heard. They mimic each other in succession, as the original word evolves into other words and sounds. This work experiments with language, decoupling words from meanings and speech from sound.

Action 3:
Andre Aboulian + performer
